Municipal Code Corporation
http://www.municode.com/database.html
Why Search Codes on the Internet?
- It’s Free
- It’s Current
- It’s Accurate
- It’s Easy
- It’s Accessible
Please note: MCC publishes the codes in two versions
of Folio software. The newer version only works with
a newer browser. Even if the newer version is available
through your browser, you may want to use the older version.
It is easier to use and loads much faster. Additionally,
the Tampa Code is not listed in the new version.
"Older Version"
http://199.44.47.22/database.html
It doesn’t look as slick
but it works just fine!
Searching MCC on the Internet: From Alachua
to Winter Park
http://fws.municode.com/CGI-BIN/om_isapi.dll?&softpage=FL_Multi_Query_Request
Boolean connectors:
Storm and Water to search for both
"Storm Water" to phrase search
Inoperative or Abandoned to search either
Assess* for assessment, assessed, etc.
Abandoned not vehicle to eliminate a term
Decision tree shows the number of times
each word appears in the database.
You have the option of selecting "Browse View" or
"Document View"
Browse View splits the screen. It simultaneously
displays the table of contents and notes where your hits
occur and the documents where your hits occur. Document
View takes you straight to your hits and gives a broader
reading screen.
Municipal Codes – New Browser
Browse View
- All the windows are sizable
- Terms are highlighted
- Use arrows to move to next or previous hit
- You can revise your search at the bottom of the
screen
- Help explains the screen layout but offers
no search hints
Document View
The table of contents window is eliminated.
In both Browse and Document View you can
link to the top of a Chapter or Article by clicking in
the "reference window." Also, you can scroll from one
section to the next – you are not limited to the sections
your search pulled up.
Tampa City Code
http://old.municode.com/folio.pgi/10132.NFO?
Note: Tampa code is only available under the old
browser. If fact you won’t even see it listed under the
new browser list. It requires a password. Do not click
where it says "password." Click on "Tampa." It’s not secret
information just hard to find. It is free and the clerks’
office gives it out the password:
User ID: flc
Password: code
Municipal Code Corporation – The
"Old" Browser
Click on Query to initiate a search. The
decision tree shows how many times each word appears in
the database. Your search will get more results when you
add "or" connectors. It will get smaller when you add
"and" connectors. In the older version of the software,
the connectors are identical to the newer version except
you can do a proximity search: "water retention"/10
searches for water within ten words of retention.
Ten is just an example, you can search any number.
Document View takes you directly to the first
document that contains your search terms.
- Terms are highlighted with red arrows.
- You can go to the top of a section, chapter, etc.
by clicking in the top window
- The "next" and "Prev" buttons refer to documents.
- The "Next Hit" and "Prev Hit" buttons refer to search
terms.
Municipal Code Corporation – The "Old" Browser
Contents View
Contents view allows you to see where your hits are
before going into the document. You can expand the Contents
view by clicking on the plus signs (+). It will expand
the outline another level. If you click on the Chapter,
you will go into the document at the top of the Chapter.
Your "Next Hit" button will take you to your first search
term. You can click back and forth between Contents
and Document to get your bearings.
ListServs
There are thousands of discussion groups available
on legal related topics. Through e-mail, lively and informative
communications thrive. Need something out-of-state? Got
a tricky question that requires more expertise? Throw
the question to the group. Chances are you’ll have a response
in hours – if not minutes.
Tips on List Servs
- They can dominate your e-mail (and your life) if
you aren’t careful. The largest groups can slam you
with a hundred messages a day. Each site has different
instructions to "unsubscribe." Those instructions
are listed at the site below If you subscribe to a
large list, suspend your subscription if you go away
on vacation.
- Messages posted to the group are archived
and searchable. Remember whatever you write is preserved
– forever.
- If you want to respond to an individual who posed
a question, be careful when you press the return key
on your e-mail. More often than not, you will respond
to the entire list. See note above!
